The three TOP teams in which Marco Asensio would start if he decides to leave Real Madrid

The winter transfer market could be the exit window for one of the white players who has accumulated the fewest minutes so far

Marco Asensio’s stay at Real Madrid could have an expiration date: January 2023. The Mallorcan’s irregular performance since he injured his knee and his lack of commitment as a white footballer at times have caused his name not to be on the schedule of renewals for the coming seasons.

Asensio has once again placed himself in the media spotlight due to his incendiary statements in an interview for Cadena COPE. In this conversation, he was asked if he would ever play for eternal rivals FC Barcelona. Neither short nor lazy, Marco Asensio blurted out a few words that have infuriated a certain sector of Real Madrid: “I haven’t valued it or thought about it. I can’t give you an answer.”

This answer directly contrasts with the words of one of his companions, Federico Valverde, asked about the same question. The Uruguayan midfielder did not hesitate to affirm that he would “never” play for FC Barcelona “out of respect for Madrid, the shield that feeds me and the values that they taught me at home”. The forcefulness of this statement is absent in Asensio’s response, which does not close the door on the Catalan team.

However, there are other possibilities for Asensio, as the Mallorca footballer himself acknowledged in the interview with COPE. Although there is still no clue as to which teams have been interested in the Spanish winger, there are several candidates in Europe that could offer a good fit for Marco Asensio.

Next stop: Old Trafford?
The first of them is Manchester United. The Red Devils are in the process of being refounded, with an Erik ten Hag who wants to return the competitiveness that the club had when he was coached by Sir Alex Ferguson. Among these refoundation plans, the Balearic end could enter as a winter reinforcement.

Despite the arrival of Antony as one of the new jewels of the Old Trafford team, the English team is not ruled out of the race to acquire the services of the Real Madrid player.

They came very close to doing it this summer. In addition to taking Casemiro for a sum of eighty million euros, Asensio could have traveled on the same flight for a transfer of thirty million euros.

The operation was not completed despite the insistence of Jorge Mendes: Marco Asensio himself stopped the transfer. One of the main reasons was the lack of motivation that not playing in the Champions League gave him, a competition in which the Balearic winger still wants to participate.

From white to red and black
AC Milan was another of the clubs with which Asensio was closely linked in the past summer market. Although it seemed that things had cooled down, all the media suggest that the Rossoneri is the best positioned to take over the Majorcan’s services.

After many years away from the top European competition, AC Milan returns to the Champions League to stay hand in hand with Brahim Díaz and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so Asensio could form a spectacular attacking trident with them and progress even further in his idyll with Europe.

The latest information suggests that AC Milan would like to take advantage of the fact that Asensio is free in January 2023 so that his transfer takes place as a free agent and thus avoid paying a transfer to Real Madrid.

In this way, the red and black would keep their accounts healthy and would have Charles de Ketelaere, signed this summer, and Marco Asensio as a free agent to join their ranks for the second half of the season.

an old acquaintance
Another club that returns to the Champions League is Tottenham Hotspurs. Asensio’s history with Tottenham is longer than it may seem at first, since the north London club has been trying to get the services of the Balearic winger for more than three years.

Already in 2019, when Mauricio Pochettino was still his coach, the English team considered the option of incorporating the winger. Real Madrid’s response was clear: Asensio is non-transferable, he will only leave for whoever pays the termination clause of 700 million euros.

This interest from the London team has lasted during 2020 and 2021, when Asensio received a juicy offer, also rejected by him. At that time, he believed he could win Carlo Ancelotti’s trust by offering a good level during the first half of the season. Since the first leg of the round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain, everything has fallen apart.

The main reason why Asensio could be a starter at Tottenham is because of his versatility and because they still consider that he could offer interesting options in attack alongside two true goal-scoring machines: Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

These three teams are the most option
